Shinkansen – The Bullet Train

3+

It’s interesting that I’m on the bullet train again today as I write this but I first rode one last Friday.  We took the train about 1.5 hours to Toyohashi to talk with a key doctor there about Rhythmia. We were a little spoiled I think since we rode I the “Green Car”, which is like their First Class with reserved seats, etc.

It’s a very smooth ride and very interesting as the landscape is constantly changing and these trains fly.  I definitely prefer the train to airlines but I have a hard time concentrating since I want to look out of the window the whole time.  Here’s a short video of the view out the window.  Hope you don’t get motion-sick…

On the way back, we waited on the platform for our train to come and about every 4 minutes a shinkansen would fly by at uncomfortable speed. There is a ton of wind, noise, and speed and that adds up to an intimidating presence.  Here is a video (if I can get it to work) of one going by:

So we are on the train now for about 2.5 hours to visit another key physician in Kyoto so we probably won’t be back to Tokyo until late tonight.  Another nice thing is that you can get beer at the station or on the train and also grab food.  So we had a nice dinner the other night on the shinkansen!

  1. You wouldn’t want to get in the way of that speeding bullet! Do you know what you are eating? I see chopsticks. Is it hard to eat going that fast?
